Emerging in Response to Trends: The New Darling of the Internet, Unveiling the Secrets Behind the Popularity of Micro Drama Series
On June 8, 2024, at 5:00 PM Pacific Time, the Chinese Writers Association of America 2024 Film and Television Forum commenced on ZOOM with the theme "An Analysis of Micro Drama Series Creation Methods - Unveiling the Secrets of the 'Sino-American Writers Cup' Competition."
In the past two years, with the rise of internet short videos, a new format of micro drama series has emerged on social media platforms, rapidly gaining popularity. To foster innovation and development in micro drama, and to provide a platform for literary enthusiasts to showcase their talents and enrich micro drama scriptwriting, the Chinese American Writers Association initiated the "CWAA Cup" Global Micro Drama Series Literary Script Competition on May 15, 2024. This event is co-hosted by Dreamood Pictures and the World Chinese Micro fiction Research Association.
The competition has five themes:
Overcoming Life Challenges - Interweaving setbacks and adversities, rebirth, and comebacks. The protagonist fights against fate, rising from the ashes even in dire circumstances.
Personal Growth - From ordinary to extraordinary, transforming to realize one's value. The protagonist evolves step by step from an average person to achieve remarkable success.
Romantic Love - Passionate first encounters, enduring companionship, unspoken understandings, and steadfast vows... Exploring the multidimensional expressions of love.
Feminism - The protagonist breaks free from constraints, pursuing equality and freedom, unleashing female power.
Cultural Collision - Depicting encounters and interactions among people from different cultural backgrounds, exploring cultural conflicts and resolutions, showcasing the charm and beauty of multiculturalism.
Submissions for the competition began on May 15, 2024, and will end on August 30, 2024. The results will be announced by the end of 2024 after preliminary, secondary, and final evaluations.
The organizing committee will recommend the winning entries to film and television production companies and publish a collection titled "First ‘CWAA Cup' Global Micro Drama Series Literary Script Awards."
To ensure the success of this competition and to clearly articulate the concepts behind micro drama script creation, benefiting more creators, the CWAA utilized its 2024 Film and Television Forum. Permanent member, dramatist, and producer Eno Q, Vice-Chair of the competition's organizing committee and President of Dreamood Pictures, shared her insights on micro drama creation methods.
The forum was chaired by Mr. Ren, member of the Chinese American Writers Association’s Novel and Film and Television Committee, with technical support by Dr. Shi.
Dr. Gee-Schweiger, President of CWAA, succinctly outlined the significance of hosting this forum and the global competition.
Eno Q delivered a detailed explanation of the industry trends in micro drama series creation over the course of more than two hours, including topics such as drama genre and themes, commercial models, structural composition of 80-episode dramas, plot twists in individual episodes, character development, and localization of American dramas. She also vividly explained scriptwriting techniques, character setting, character arcs, and series creation aspects like cultural differences and adaptation strategies.
The lecture was highly interactive, with guests and participants actively raising various questions and expressing their creative challenges, all of which were addressed by Eno Q. Her professionalism and willingness to share the true secrets of creation were highly praised by all attendees.
In particular, she vividly explained key scriptwriting techniques such as "setup, development, turn, and conclusion," "character setting," "character arc," as well as series creation aspects like "cultural differences" and "adaptation strategies."
The lecture lasted for over two hours. During this time, after each topic was discussed, guests and attendees eagerly posed various questions and expressed their creative dilemmas, which Ms. Eno Q addressed one by one.
Ms. Eno Q's professionalism and her candid sharing of true creative secrets during the forum were met with unanimous praise from all participants.
