Shanghai Securities News China Securities Network report (Reporter Yang Xiangfei) March 28:
The forum on the innovative development and international dissemination of micro dramas, themed "New Insights, New Trends, New Journey," opened in Chengdu. Feng Shengyong, Director of the Online Audio-Visual Program Administration of the National Radio and Television Administration, stated that micro dramas should align with the times, resonate with the people, and march forward with innovation.
Zhou Jihong, Director of the International Cooperation Department of the National Radio and Television Administration, expressed that the micro drama industry should enhance its operational levels and broaden its international channels. There is a need to strengthen the construction of independent brands and promote the transition of micro dramas from an emerging to a mature industry by leveraging technological innovation to enhance international communication efficacy.
"The popularity of micro dramas provides a new stage for innovative film and television productions, and the industry is displaying tremendous explosive power," said Wang Juan, Vice President of Tencent Online Video. Tencent Video will steadfastly follow the strategy of blending technology and art to bring more certainty to industry innovations, hoping to collaborate with more outstanding creators to produce a variety of high-quality micro dramas in the future.
Since last year, micro dramas have shown outstanding performance internationally. Wu Kelei, head of overseas business at Dianzhong Technology, mentioned, "According to market research reports, the cumulative revenue from international short dramas in the past year has reached 170 million USD, and we predict that by 2027, the international micro drama market could exceed 10 billion USD. Chinese micro dramas are also poised to become the fifth global cultural phenomenon."
ReelShort App, a product of Maple Interactive, has become a representative platform for Chinese micro dramas going international. Nan Yapeng, General Manager of Maple Interactive Beijing, shared his experience: "It took us six to seven years to build our own platform, where games, short dramas, and text product matrices are interconnected, enabling great stories to be transformed across multiple platforms."
Wang Xiaoshu, founder of Jiashu Technology, believes that AI technology and AI dubbing will aid the international reach of short dramas. "In the future, there might be free platforms like Hippo Theater overseas, covering more users, where the business model is not just about recharging but could include advertising," said Wang Xiaoshu. Liu Jinlong, CEO of ShortTV, remarked, "Short dramas are currently in a blue ocean phase internationally. Whoever has good content has the chance to become the global leader."
As an emerging content form, the entire industrial chain of micro dramas relies heavily on the close support of technology. Wang Wei, General Manager of the MXD User Experience Design Department at Tencent, believes that AI allows creators broader possibilities for creativity and expression, enabling them to focus more on core thinking and operational models. Instead of blindly chasing short-term trends, a comprehensive creative perspective embraces technological iterations, all in service of creation.
Ma Di, head of short dramas at China Mobile Migu, pointed out from a platform perspective that leveraging "short drama + technology" will drive industry transformation through innovative measures, enhance factor productivity, and expand industry pathways through cross-industry integration, leading the new revolution in the short drama industry with new productive forces.
This forum is one of the sub-forums of the 11th China Online Audio-Visual Conference, guided by the Online Audio-Visual Department and International Department of the National Radio and Television Administration, hosted by the China Online Audio-Visual Program Service Association, and undertaken by Tencent Video.
